It was captivating, sexy, unpredictable, and heartbreaking.

Good lord that woman knows how to write. This was possibly the singular exact work that could have reignited my love of reading after so many years. The work was intriguing, well written, romantic and classy, and somehow personal. Taylor weaved together a plot full of twists and surprises and rewards, but at the same time so balanced between indulgence and restraint.

The scandal of Evelyn's life was so gracefully draped over her suffering and duality of fighting for and between the two things she wanted: fame and love. It was captivating, sexy, unpredictable, and heartbreaking.

I felt like Evelyn was me: a bisexual woman who happens to be consumed with one woman, and feeling like she wants to do anything and everything to love her, but also wanting to do everything and anything to feel worthy of any type of love, to receive any love, to protect the ones she loves, and to not care about being perfect enough for the love of strangers. (Probably an overshare, but oh well) But there was also kinship found in the layers of Monique that shone through the questionable first impressions I had - conflicted about a father she apparently didn't know mirrored how I feel about not knowing D (my biodad)and not fully knowing T (my biomom). felt when I found out Momma T was bisexual. And her feelings of finding out she was grieving the death of a marriage she worked at for the sake of being picture perfect and not a love she felt for her husband was a great revelation that so many people are in need of - whether about a job, a marriage, a house, an education, a career path. While it was obvious to us that Monique was playing an important role in Evelyn's life, Evelyn in return helped her come to a turning point just as important in Monique's life.

Overall, the story, the love, the writing, the familiarity, the structure, the twists, come together to make a masterpiece I couldn't stop enjoying. And the narration by _____ added even more to the words on the page - if I read it as a paperback instead of listening to it, it may have been a 4.5/5 instead of 5/5.
